How to Dress Your Windows for the Spanish Sun
There is a reason people move to the Spanish coast for the light. But anyone who has spent an August afternoon on the Costa Cálida knows the other side of it: floors that fade, furniture that cracks, and rooms that turn into ovens by midday. The good news is that the right window dressing solves all three at once. Here is how we think about it when we visit a home.
Start with the sun, not the fabric
Before choosing a single colour, look at which way your windows face. South- and west-facing rooms take the hardest, hottest light and need real heat and UV control. North-facing rooms stay cooler and are more about privacy and softness. Walk through your home at different times of day — the window that feels fine at 10am may be unbearable at 5pm.
Curtains, blinds, or both?
Each does a different job, and many coastal homes use them together:
- Roller and day & night blinds — the workhorses for sun control. Easy to adjust through the day, and a reflective or screen fabric keeps heat out while you keep some view.
- Pleated and Roman blinds — a softer, tailored look that still filters strong light, ideal for bedrooms and snugs.
- Curtains — for warmth, acoustics and that finished, lived-in feel. Layered over a blind, they give you full control from bright and airy to completely dark.
For a bedroom you actually want to sleep past sunrise in, a blackout blind under a curtain is hard to beat.
Fabrics that survive the coast
Not every fabric belongs near the Mediterranean. Look for materials that are fade-resistant and happy with heat and the occasional salt breeze. Lighter, breathable weaves keep rooms cooler; technical screen fabrics block UV while staying semi-transparent. Pale colours reflect heat and hide dust better than you would expect. If a window gets direct sun for hours, ask specifically about UV resistance — it is the difference between curtains that last two years and ones that last ten.
Measure twice — or let us do it
Made-to-measure is not a luxury here, it is the point: ready-made sizes rarely fit Spanish windows, terrace doors and persiana boxes. A few millimetres decide whether light leaks down the sides or the blind sits cleanly. If you are comfortable measuring, do it twice and note the recess depth. If you would rather not, that is exactly what we are for.
The short version
Work out where the sun hits hardest, pair a practical blind with a curtain where you want warmth or full blackout, choose fade-resistant fabrics in lighter tones, and get the measurements right. Do that, and your home stays cool, your furniture keeps its colour, and you still get to enjoy the view that brought you here.
